Early life and real name
Catherine Bush was born on July 30, 1958, at a maternity hospital in Bexleyheath, United Kingdom. She grew up in an artistic family with her parents and two brothers, John Carder Bush and Paddy Bush. Her father worked as a general practitioner, and her mother was a staff nurse. Kate grew up in a former farmhouse near Bexleyheath and attended St Joseph's Convent Grammar School.
Coming from a musical background, Kate taught herself to play the piano at the age of 11. She also played the organ and studied the violin before starting to write her own songs. She later attended London South East Colleges and trained at a local karate club where her brother taught.
How Kate became famous
Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour helped finance a professional demo tape for Kate after receiving her compositions through a mutual friend. This demo led to her signing a contract with EMI Records. During her early years with the label, she spent time on her education while recording songs and taking interpretive dance classes with Lindsay Kemp.
In 1978, at the age of 19, Kate released her debut single 'Wuthering Heights'. The track topped the UK singles chart for four weeks, making her the first female artist to achieve a UK number one with a fully self-written song. Her debut album, The Kick Inside, sold over a million copies in the United Kingdom.
