Early life and education
Kate Winslet was born on October 5, 1975, in Reading, United Kingdom. Her mother, Sally Ann Bridges, worked as a nanny and waitress, while her father, Roger John Winslet, was an actor who took laboring jobs to support the household. She grew up with two sisters, Beth and Joss, in a family with limited financial means that sometimes relied on charity and welfare benefits.
Living in a family of actors inspired her to pursue performing from a young age. She attended Redroofs Theatre School, where she participated in school productions and gained early acting experience. At age sixteen, she left the school due to financial constraints and worked at a delicatessen to support herself before starting her professional screen career.
