Who is Kevin Großkreutz?
Early football career
Kevin Großkreutz began playing for local Dortmund clubs including FC Merkur 07, VfL Kemminghausen, and DJK Rot-Weiß Obereving. He moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2002 during his youth. After his time with the Dortmund youth setup, he transitioned to Rot Weiss Ahlen.
In 2006, he was promoted to the first team at Rot Weiss Ahlen. He helped the club achieve promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 2008. During that season, he scored 12 goals and earned a spot in the kicker XI of the year.
Borussia Dortmund success
He joined Borussia Dortmund in 2009 and scored his first goal against 1. FC Nürnberg in December of that year. During his tenure at the club, he made 233 appearances and scored 27 goals. He won two consecutive Bundesliga titles and the 2012 domestic double.
Kevin achieved success in various competitions including the DFL-Supercup in 2013 and 2014. He also scored a crucial winning goal against Marseille in the UEFA Champions League in December 2013. Before his departure, he played several matches for Borussia Dortmund II in 2015.
Later club career
A move to Galatasaray in 2015 did not result in any appearances due to documentation issues with FIFA. He returned to the Bundesliga by signing with VfB Stuttgart in January 2016. His contract with Stuttgart ended in March 2017 following an incident involving a bar fight.
After leaving Stuttgart, he joined Darmstadt 98 in April 2017 for one season. He then played two seasons with KFC Uerdingen 05 before announcing his professional retirement in early 2021. He later joined the sixth-tier side TuS Bövinghausen in January 2021.
Germany national team
Kevin Großkreutz earned several caps for the German national team between 2010 and 2014. He made his international debut in a friendly match against Malta in May 2010. He earned a total of six caps for his country.
He was a member of the German squad that won the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Although he did not play during the tournament itself, he remained part of the championship winning team. His final appearance for Germany came in a summer friendly against Argentina.
