Biography
Who is Lil Pump?
Early life and background
Gazzy Fabio Garcia was born in Miami, Florida, on August 17, 2000. He attended Charles W. Flanagan High School but faced multiple expulsions during his time in the district school system. Eventually, he enrolled in an opportunity school setting but was dismissed in the tenth grade after a fight occurred.
His cousin, Lil Ominous, introduced him to rapper Smokepurpp when he was thirteen years old. The two became frequent collaborators, which helped spark the start of his musical path.
Rise to fame
His career began after Smokepurpp created a beat and asked him to freestyle over it. This initial track was released on SoundCloud in 2016 under his stage name. He gained momentum with tracks like Elementary, Ignorant, and Gang Shit, which each surpassed three million streams on the platform. These successes helped him build a presence in the South Florida underground rap scene.
By 2017, he released the songs D Rose and Boss, which together gathered 70 million streams. This surge in popularity led to a contract with Warner Records and Tha Lights Global. That same year, he released his self-titled debut studio album. The lead single, Gucci Gang, became his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at the third position.
Musical career highlights
In 2018, he collaborated with various artists to maintain his momentum. He released the single Esskeetit and performed it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Later that year, he worked with Kanye West and Adele Givens on the song I Love It, which hit number one on the Canadian Hot 100 chart. He also contributed the track Welcome to the Party to the Deadpool 2 movie soundtrack alongside Diplo and French Montana.
His second studio album, Harverd Dropout, arrived in February 2019. It featured guest appearances from Lil Wayne, Offset, and Quavo. The record reached number seven on the Billboard 200. He was also named to the Forbes 30 under 30 list during that year.
Controversies and recent work
The rapper has faced various public challenges throughout his career. In late 2018, he was accused of using racial stereotypes against Asian people after previewing a song snippet that included slurs. He later uploaded a video on Instagram to address the incident and released the track with those lyrics removed. In December 2020, he was banned from flying on JetBlue after he reportedly refused to wear a face covering during a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles.
Recent years have seen him experiment with different business ventures and music releases. In 2021, he entered a partnership with the Sweet NFT marketplace to sell digital trading cards. He also released the album No Name in late 2021 with producer Ronny J, though the project lacked social media promotion and did not chart. By 2023, he released his third studio album, Lil Pump 2, featuring guests like YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Ty Dolla Sign. This album did not land on any music charts upon its release.
