Biography
Who is LiSA?
Early life and real name
LiSA was born as Risa Oribe in Seki, Japan, on June 24, 1987. She started taking piano lessons at age three and later took vocal and dance lessons during her school years. While in elementary school, she participated in an audition at the Nippon Budokan, which helped her decide to pursue a career as an artist. During junior high school, she formed a band that covered songs by artists like Avril Lavigne and Love Psychedelico.
She chose not to attend university so she could focus entirely on her music. In high school, she joined an indie rock band named Chucky and served as the vocalist. After the band disbanded in July 2008, she relocated to Tokyo to continue pursuing her singing career.
How LiSA became famous
In Tokyo, Oribe formed a band called Love is Same All and adopted the stage name Lisa, which serves as an acronym for the band name. Her major breakthrough came in 2010 when she sang songs for the anime series Angel Beats! As one of the vocalists for the fictional in-story band Girls Dead Monster. She released multiple singles and an album under that project on the Key Sounds Label.
Following her work with Girls Dead Monster, she made her official solo debut in April 2011 with the mini-album Letters to U under Sony Music Artists. She released her first solo single, Oath Sign, later that year, which served as the opening theme for the anime series Fate/Zero and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan.
Career highlights
LiSA gained widespread popularity after performing Crossing Field, the opening theme to the 2012 anime series Sword Art Online. The single charted well on the Oricon weekly charts and received a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan. She continued to release chart-topping music, including the single Rising Hope for The Irregular at Magic High School and Shirushi for Sword Art Online II.
In 2019, she released the single Gurenge as the opening theme for the anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, followed by the ending theme From the Edge in collaboration with FictionJunction. Her music regularly appears in the top ten of the Oricon weekly charts. She has also performed live at major venues such as the Nippon Budokan and the Saitama Super Arena.
