Biography
Who is Loïc Rémy?
Early life and career beginnings
Loïc Rémy was born in Rillieux-la-Pape, France. He began his football path with a local youth club called ASPTT Lyon in his home city. Scouts eventually identified his potential, leading him to join the youth academy at Olympique Lyonnais. During his time training at the Centre Tola Vologe, he practiced alongside well-known future players like Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa.
In October 2006, the young forward signed his first professional contract with Lyon. He debuted in the Derby du Rhône against Saint-Étienne as a substitute for Sylvain Wiltord. He earned his first start the following month in a victory against Sedan. Despite these early appearances, he struggled to secure a permanent spot in the senior squad over the next three seasons under managers Gérard Houllier and Alain Perrin.
Loan to Lens and move to Nice
To gain more playing time, the club loaned him to RC Lens in early 2008. He debuted for the team in February and scored his first professional goal during a 4-1 victory over Caen. He also contributed to the team's run in the Coupe de la Ligue, scoring in the semi-finals against Le Mans. Although he appeared in the final against Paris Saint-Germain, he left the pitch early due to an injury.
Following that loan spell, he joined OGC Nice on a four-year deal in June 2008. The transfer fee was approximately 8 million euros. He quickly made an impact, scoring six goals in his first six matches. By the end of the 2008-09 season, he had tallied 13 goals across 36 appearances. He continued to perform well for Nice during the 2009-10 campaign, including scoring a decisive goal against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes in November 2009.
Success at Marseille and Premier League career
In August 2010, the forward signed a five-year contract with Olympique de Marseille. Although medical tests initially revealed a possible heart defect, specialists later declared him fit to play. He scored his first goal for the club in October 2010 against Nancy. During his time there, he also competed in the UEFA Champions League, scoring against MŠK Žilina and Spartak Moscow.
In January 2013, he moved abroad to join Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League. Despite scoring on his debut against West Ham United, the team faced relegation. He remained in the league the following season on loan at Newcastle United. In the summer of 2014, he signed with Chelsea. During his first season with the London club, he contributed to their Premier League title win and their League Cup victory. He later spent time on loan at Crystal Palace in 2016.
