Who is LP?
Early life and background
Laura Pergolizzi was born on March 18, 1981, in Huntington Station on Long Island in the United States. Their parents were of Italian descent, with family roots originating from Palermo and Naples. Pergolizzi attended Walt Whitman High School in South Huntington during their youth. When Pergolizzi was sixteen years old, their mother passed away. Years later in 2014, Pergolizzi wrote the song Forever For Now in memory of their mother.
After moving to New York City in 2004, Pergolizzi began using the professional name LP. David Lowery of the band Cracker discovered LP performing live and featured them on the track Cinderella in 1998. Lowery also produced LP's debut album Heart-Shaped Scar, which was released in 2001 on Koch Records. A second album titled Suburban Sprawl & Alcohol followed in 2004 through Lightswitch Records.
Songwriting success and major labels
In 2006, LP performed at the South by Southwest music conference and signed with The Island Def Jam Music Group. After leaving that label due to artistic differences, LP signed with SoBe Entertainment in 2007. During this period, LP co-wrote the track Love Will Keep You Up All Night for the Backstreet Boys album Unbreakable. LP also wrote songs for other artists, including tracks on Heidi Montag's album Superficial.
A major career breakthrough occurred when LP co-wrote the song Cheers Drink to That for Rihanna's fifth studio album Loud, released in 2010. LP also co-wrote the song Beautiful People for Christina Aguilera, which appeared on the Burlesque soundtrack. In 2011, LP signed a deal with Warner Bros. Records and had their song Into the Wild featured in a national television advertising campaign for Citibank.
Global recognition and Lost on You
LP released the major-label live extended play Into the Wild Live at EastWest Studios in 2012 and performed at numerous festivals such as Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. In 2012, LP became the first female Martin Guitar ambassador. The third studio album Forever for Now was released in 2014, supported by the lead single Night Like This.
In November 2015, LP released the single Lost on You, which achieved major international success. The song Muddy Waters from the same project was featured in television shows such as Orange Is the New Black and Power. LP continued releasing music, including the albums Heart to Mouth in 2018, Churches in 2021, and Love Lines in 2023.
