Who is Luísa Sobral?
Early life and music studies
Luísa Sobral was born in Lisbon, Portugal. During her childhood, she spent some time living in the United States. Her father is Salvador Luís Cabral Braamcamp Sobral and her mother is Luísa Maria Cabral Posser Vilar. She is the sister of the singer Salvador Sobral.
In 2003, she competed in the first season of the television series Ídolos. She finished the competition in third place. Following this, she moved to Boston to focus on her musical education. She attended the Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2009.
Musical career and albums
The singer released her first studio album, titled The Cherry on My Cake, in 2011. This record reached number three on the Portuguese albums chart. In 2012, she worked with Melody Gardot and Jools Holland. She also went on tour alongside Gardot.
Luísa released her second studio album, There's a Flower in My Bedroom, in 2013. She followed this with her third album, Lu-Pu-I-Pi-Sa-Pa. Her fourth studio album, named Luísa, was recorded at United Recording Studios in Los Angeles with Joe Henry and Greg Leisz.
Eurovision Song Contest success
In 2016, she wrote the song Amar pelos dois for the Festival da Canção. This jazz ballad was performed by her brother, Salvador Sobral. The track won the competition and was selected to represent Portugal at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017.
During the rehearsals in Kyiv, she had to perform the song instead of Salvador due to his health. The song won the contest on May 13, 2017. This was the first victory for Portugal and set a record for the most points earned in a final. Luísa Sobral performed with her brother during the encore.
Awards and personal life
In April 2018, the singer and her brother received the Portuguese Order of Merit. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa awarded them the rank of Commander. This honor recognized their contributions to the country.
Luísa Sobral is married and has four children. Her children are José, Rosa, Camila, and Salvador. They were born in 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022 respectively.
