Early life and career beginnings
Marcell Jansen was born in Mönchengladbach, West Germany, on November 4, 1985. Growing up in his home city, he joined Borussia Mönchengladbach from a local side in 1993 and progressed through the youth academy ranks.
By the 2004 season, he began playing for the club reserve squad in the fourth division. Manager Dick Advocaat eventually gave him his first team debut in December of that year during a match against Hertha BSC.
Following an injury to the club captain, Jansen secured a regular spot in the lineup. He signed his first professional contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach in January 2005, committing to the club until 2008 and earning a call-up to the under-21 national squad.
