Who is Marco Tardelli?
Early life and origins
Marco Tardelli was born in Capanne di Careggine, which is located in the province of Lucca within Tuscany. He grew up in a working-class family as the youngest of four children.
He began his professional football path in 1972 with the Italian club Pisa, competing in Serie C. This early period established the foundation for his long career in professional football.
Football career highlights
After playing for Como in Serie B, Marco joined Juventus in October 1975. During his ten years in Turin, he won five Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia trophies. He also secured the 1984 European Super Cup and won three major UEFA trophies, including the European Cup in 1985 and the UEFA Cup in 1977.
He was one of the first three players to win all three major UEFA club competitions. He achieved this alongside his teammates Antonio Cabrini and Gaetano Scirea. His time at Juventus included 376 appearances and 51 goals scored.
International success with Italy
Marco Tardelli earned 81 caps for the Italy national team. He made his international debut against Portugal on April 7, 1976. He served as the captain of the national side between 1983 and 1985.
His most famous achievement came during the 1982 FIFA World Cup, where he helped Italy win the tournament. He scored two goals during that campaign, including a strike in the final against West Germany. His emotional celebration after scoring in the final is a famous moment in football history.
Managerial and coaching career
After retiring from playing in 1988, he began coaching the Italy U-16 side. He later served as an assistant to Cesare Maldini for the Under-21 team. He managed Como in 1993 and Cesena in 1995.
As the head coach of the Italy Under-21 team, he won the 1997 Mediterranean Games and the 2000 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He also managed the Egypt national football team from 2004 to 2005.
