Biography
Who is Marit Larsen?
Early life and music beginnings
Marit Elisabeth Larsen was born on July 1, 1983, in Lørenskog, Norway. As a child, she began playing the violin at the age of five and continued playing until she turned eight. During her early years, she formed a close friendship with Marion Raven. Together, they started a band called Hubba Bubba when they were eight years old, named after their favorite bubblegum. They released a children's album titled Synger Kjente Barnesanger under the name Marit and Marion, which earned a Spellemannprisen nomination when they were both twelve years old.
The duo eventually shortened their band name to M2M. In 1998, Atlantic Records signed them to a worldwide contract. Their debut single, Don't Say You Love Me, became a critical and commercial success and was included on their debut album, Shades of Purple. Although they received critical acclaim, their second album did not perform as well commercially, leading to the duo breaking up shortly after its release.
Solo career and debut album
Following the breakup of M2M, Marit took time off to focus on her education at Lørenskog Upper Secondary School and the University of Oslo. She returned to the music scene in late 2004 and early 2005 with a new image and original songs that showed her skills on both the guitar and the piano. She recorded her debut solo album, Under the Surface, with the record label EMI in the fall of 2005.
The album's first single, Don't Save Me, climbed into the top ten on Norwegian charts and eventually reached number one on the official Norwegian singles chart. Under the Surface was released in Norway on March 6, 2006, and quickly achieved gold certification before reaching double platinum status. The record earned her several accolades, including the Spellemann Award for female artist of the year, the Spellemann Award for the videoclip of the year, an Alarmprisen in pop, and the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Norwegian Act.
Further albums and international success
Marit released her second solo album, The Chase, in Norway in October 2008. The lead single, If a Song Could Get Me You, reached number one on the Norwegian singles chart and later achieved chart success in Germany and Austria as well. She also joined Jason Mraz as an opening act for his European spring tour in early 2009.
Her third album, titled Spark, was released in late 2011 across Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Her fourth studio album, When the Morning Comes, followed in October 2014. Throughout her career, she has also received the Norsk Artistforbund Honorary Award for her contributions to music.
