Biography
Who is Mark Owen?
Early life in Oldham
Mark Owen Anthony Patrick Owen was born in Oldham on January 27, 1972. Growing up, he lived in a small council house with his mother Mary, his father Keith, brother Daniel, and sister Tracey. His father worked as a decorator and later at a police station, while his mother was a bakery supervisor. Mark attended Holy Rosary Primary and St Augustine of Canterbury RC High School, both located in Oldham.
Before finding fame in music, Mark had little interest in the industry. He played football briefly for Chadderton F.C. And had trials at Manchester United and Rochdale. Prior to auditioning for his famous pop group, he worked at a bank in Failsworth.
Rise with Take That
In 1989, manager Nigel Martin-Smith brought together Gary Barlow, Mark, Howard Donald, Jason Orange, and Robbie Williams to form Take That. The group signed with RCA records and achieved early success with top 40 hits before securing their first number one single with Barlow's track Pray. Their debut album Take That & Party was released in August 1992 and reached number two on the UK Album Chart.
The band followed this with the successful albums Everything Changes and Nobody Else, which both went straight to number one. Mark sang lead vocals on tracks such as Babe and The Day After Tomorrow. Despite having limited vocal contributions during the original run, Mark was widely considered the most popular member of the group due to his boyish charm, regularly earning awards from teen magazines.
Reunion and stadium tours
Following a split in the 1990s, Mark and his bandmates returned for a 2005 television documentary and a subsequent stadium tour. The reformed group released the comeback single Patience, which topped the charts across Europe and won a Brit Award for single of the year. This was followed by Shine, which featured Mark on lead vocals as the tenth number one single for the band.
The group released the album Beautiful World in 2006, followed by the record-breaking tour Take That Presents: The Circus Live in 2009. In 2010, the original line-up reunited for the studio album Progress, which became the fastest-selling record of the century in the UK and led to another big stadium tour.
Solo career and projects
After Take That split in the 1990s, Mark became the first former member to release a solo record. He achieved success with his debut single Child and his second single Clementine, both reaching number three on the UK Singles Chart. His debut solo album Green Man was released in 1996 and sold one million copies worldwide.
In November 2002, Mark won the second series of Celebrity Big Brother with seventy-seven percent of the public vote. He later released solo albums including In Your Own Time, How the Mighty Fall, and The Art of Doing Nothing. He also established his own record company, Sedna Records, in April 2004.
