Who is Mark Wales?
Early life and family
Mark Wales was born in the remote community of Newman, Western Australia. His parents met in the country town of Maffra in Victoria, where his mother worked as a secretary and his father was a bank teller. His father later became a truck driver in the iron ore region of Newman.
He grew up alongside his older brother Steve and his younger brother Dan. The family eventually moved to Perth and Geraldton due to his parents' jobs with Australian Customs before settling in Leeming. Mark attended high school in Leeming, where he began thinking about his future career path.
Military career and service
Mark joined the Australian Defence Force in 1997 at the age of 17. After studying at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra, he attended the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in 2000. He served as an officer in the Australian Army for 16 years, completing ten different deployments.
His service included roles in Timor-Leste, the Solomon Islands, Iraq, Lebanon, Fiji, and various locations in Afghanistan. As a Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, he led a platoon in Townsville before deploying to East Timor in 2001. He later moved into special forces after completing selection for the Special Air Service Regiment in 2004.
Business and writing
After leaving the military, Mark moved to the United States to begin studies in business. He eventually launched an apparel brand based in New York. This transition marked his move into the role of an entrepreneur and fashion designer.
He is also an author who has documented his life experiences in print. In 2021, he released a memoir titled Survivor. This book covers his time during the war, his struggles with PTSD, and the concept of moral injury.

Mark Wales is married to Samantha Gash. His upbringing in Western Australia and his experiences in the military have heavily influenced his perspective on life and his subsequent writing career.
