Biography
Who is Martina McBride?
Early life and family background
Martina McBride was born Martina Mariea Schiff in Sharon, Kansas, on July 29, 1966. Her parents, Daryl and Jeanne Schiff, operated a local dairy farm. Daryl also managed a cabinetry shop and introduced his daughter to country music at a young age. This upbringing fostered her deep interest in vocal performance.
As a child, she practiced singing by performing along with records from artists like Patsy Cline, Connie Smith, and Reba McEntire. By the time she was eight or nine, Martina joined a band fronted by her father called The Schiffters. Her involvement with the group grew over the years to include playing keyboard in addition to singing. She also performed with a local Wichita rock band named The Penetrators during her youth.
Moving to Nashville and early career
In 1987, she formed a band called Lotus and rented rehearsal space from John McBride, whom she married in 1988. The couple relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1989 to pursue opportunities in the country music industry. John McBride later found work as a sound crew member and production manager for Garth Brooks.
Martina occasionally assisted her husband on tour by selling souvenirs for Garth Brooks. In 1990, Brooks offered her an opening act position contingent on her securing a recording contract. With assistance from her husband on a demo tape, she signed with RCA Nashville Records in 1991. Her debut studio album, The Time Has Come, arrived in 1992 and featured honky tonk and country folk influences.
Breakthrough and chart success
Her second album, The Way That I Am, brought mainstream attention, featuring the well-known single Independence Day. The song addressed the difficult subject of domestic abuse and eventually became her signature track. It won Video of the Year and Song of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards. The album was later certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Martina continued her success with the 1995 album Wild Angels, which produced her first number one single on the country charts. Her fourth album, Evolution, followed in 1997 and reached double platinum status. It included hits like A Broken Wing and Wrong Again. She released her first Christmas album, White Christmas, in 1998, which featured a popular rendition of O Holy Night. Her 1999 album Emotion continued this commercial momentum, yielding the hit single I Love You.
