Biography
Who is Martine Beswick?
Early life and background
Martine Beswick was born Mary Rose Penso Beswick on September 26, 1941, in Port Antonio, Jamaica. Her father was British, and her mother was of Portuguese-Jamaican heritage. In 1954, following the separation of her parents, she moved to London alongside her mother and her younger sister, Laurellie.
Adapting to life in England required quick maturity from the young actress. By 1955, she left her high school studies to find employment. Her early work helped provide necessary financial support for her family after their relocation from the Caribbean.
Bond films and career breakthrough
Martine Beswick is perhaps best known for her significant contributions to the James Bond franchise. She auditioned for the first film in the series, Dr. No, but instead secured a role in the second installment, From Russia with Love, released in 1963. She portrayed the character Zora and participated in a famous fight scene alongside actress Aliza Gur.
During the production, the director encouraged a genuine physical confrontation between the two actresses. Beswick later noted that tensions were high between the performers offscreen as well. She was mistakenly credited as Martin Beswick in the film's title sequence. She returned to the 007 series for the 1965 film Thunderball, where she played the character Paula Caplan. Because she had spent considerable time away from the Caribbean, she had to spend two weeks sunbathing before filming to match the local look of the character.
