Biography
Who is Mason Greenwood?
Early football career
Mason Greenwood began his path at the Manchester United development school in Halifax when he was only six years old. He worked his way through the various academy levels at the club. During the 2017 to 2018 season, he played for the Under-18 squad despite being young enough for the Under-16 team. He ended that season as the top scorer in the U18 Premier League North, recording 17 goals across 21 matches.
His performances in youth tournaments were well-known as well. In May 2018, the youth team won the ICGT Trophy held in the Netherlands, and Mason received the Player of the Tournament award for his contributions.
Breakthrough at Manchester United
In July 2018, Mason travelled with the first team for their pre-season tour in the United States. He signed his first professional contract with Manchester United in October 2018. His competitive debut occurred on 6 March 2019, when he entered as a substitute during a Champions League victory against Paris Saint Germain. At that time, he was 17 years and 156 days old, making him the youngest player to represent the club in the Champions League era.
His first senior goal for the club arrived on 19 September 2019, during a Europa League match against Astana. This achievement made him the youngest goalscorer for Manchester United in European competition at 17 years and 353 days old. Throughout his time at the club, he played in various competitions including the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League. In September 2020, he was assigned the number 11 shirt, joining a list of players who previously wore the number for the club.
Legal matters and club changes
In January 2022, the club suspended Mason after he was arrested on suspicion of rape. In October 2022, he was charged with attempted rape, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behaviour. By February 2023, all charges against him were dropped after key witnesses decided not to participate in the prosecution. Following this, Manchester United conducted their own internal investigation into the events leading to his 2022 arrest.
In August 2023, Mason was loaned to Getafe for the 2023–24 La Liga season. By July 2024, he left Manchester United permanently to join the French club Marseille. During the 2024–25 season, he was the joint top scorer in Ligue 1 with 21 goals and was included in the 2025–26 UNFP Team of the Season.
