Who is Mattia De Sciglio?
Early life and beginnings
Mattia De Sciglio was born in Milan, Italy, on October 20, 1992. He began his path in football as a young child while attending a parish recreation center in Rozzano. By 2001, he had moved to play for a local amateur team called Cimiano.
The following year, at age ten, the young athlete joined the youth system at AC Milan. He dedicated nine seasons to developing his skills within that organization. In 2010, he played for the under-19 squad that secured a victory in the Coppa Italia Primavera. This win was significant for the club, as it ended a 25-year drought for the team in that specific competition.
Professional career with AC Milan
Manager Massimiliano Allegri officially promoted Mattia De Sciglio to the first team squad at the start of the 2011–12 season. He made his debut as a professional on September 28, 2011, during a UEFA Champions League game against Viktoria Plzeň, which resulted in a 2–0 victory. His league debut followed in April 2012 in an away win over Chievo.
Over the next few seasons, he established himself as a versatile defender capable of playing on either the left or right flank. He was assigned the number 2 shirt for the 2012–13 season, a number previously worn by club legends like Cafu and Mauro Tassotti. Despite facing numerous injuries during the 2013–14 season, which limited his appearances, he remained a key part of the defensive rotation. He reached a milestone on March 6, 2016, by making his 100th appearance for the club while wearing the captain's armband.
Move to Juventus and loan spells
In July 2017, Mattia De Sciglio signed a five-year contract with Juventus. He made his club debut the following month in the Supercoppa Italiana. He continued to contribute to the team's success, including winning multiple Serie A titles and Coppa Italia trophies. In 2020, he moved to Lyon on a season-long loan. In 2022, he renewed his contract with Juventus until 2025. By August 2024, he joined Empoli on a one-year loan agreement.
International experience
Mattia De Sciglio has represented Italy across several age groups, starting with the under-19 and under-20 squads. He made his debut for the under-21 team in April 2012 against Scotland. He was a member of the Italian squads for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
