Who is Megan Rapinoe?
Early life and family
Megan Rapinoe was raised in Redding, California. Her parents are Jim and Denise, and she has five siblings. Her twin sister is named Rachael. Some of her siblings, Michael and Jenny, are Denise's children from a previous relationship. Her brother Brian is a child of both Jim and Denise.
Family history includes military service, as both her father and her grandfather, Jack, were members of the United States Army. Megan began playing soccer at the age of three after observing her brother Brian play the sport.
College soccer career
During her time at the University of Portland, Megan competed for the Portland Pilots. She helped her team achieve an undefeated season and win the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. During her freshman year, she scored 15 goals and provided 13 assists.
Despite facing two separate season-ending ACL injuries in 2006 and 2007, she continued her collegiate career. In 2008, she was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year. She finished her college career with 30 goals and 28 assists in 60 games.
Professional club career
Megan entered the professional ranks through the 2009 WPS Draft, where the Chicago Red Stars selected her second overall. She later played for the Philadelphia Independence and magicJack. Her career also included a stint with Sydney FC in Australia and the Seattle Sounders Women.
Much of her professional success occurred while playing for Seattle Reign FC in the NWSL. She also played in France for the club OL Lyonnes. Throughout her career, she has worked as an entrepreneur and an actor alongside her footballing duties.
National team and achievements
As a midfielder and winger, Megan represented the United States national team with great success. She was part of the squads that secured the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015 and 2019. She also earned an Olympic gold medal in 2012.
Individual honors include being named the Ballon d'Or Féminin and The Best FIFA Women's Player. In 2019, she earned the Golden Boot and Golden Ball at the World Cup in France. She was also recognized on the Time 100 list and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022.
