Biography
Who is Mehdi Taremi?
Early life and career beginnings
Mehdi Taremi was born on July 18, 1992, in Bushehr, Iran. He is the youngest of three children in his family. His father, Alishah, was an amateur footballer who played locally, and his older brother, Mohammad, also pursued a career in the sport. Before he fully committed to professional football, Mehdi served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy in Bushehr between 2010 and 2012. This period of service occurred shortly after he joined Shahin Bushehr in 2010.
His path into professional sports started with youth academies at Bargh Bushehr and Iranjavan. After his time with Shahin Bushehr, he returned to Iranjavan in 2013 on a two-year contract. During the 2013–14 season, he scored 12 goals in 22 appearances, establishing himself as a significant player in the league. This performance earned him attention from larger clubs, leading to his move to Persepolis in the summer of 2014.
Success at Persepolis
Mehdi Taremi signed a two-year contract with Persepolis in 2014. He made his debut in a draw against Naft Tehran and scored his first goal for the club against Zob Ahan in August 2014. During his tenure, he became a central figure for the team. He was named the Best Striker of the 14th Persian Gulf Pro League season. His impact grew during the 2015–16 season, where he finished as the league's top scorer with 16 goals, despite the team narrowly missing the title.
The following season, he helped Persepolis secure the Iran Pro League title, finishing as the top scorer for a second consecutive time with 18 goals. He also performed well on the continental stage, scoring a hat trick against Al Wahda in May 2017 to help the team reach the knockout rounds of the AFC Champions League. His time at Persepolis ended amidst a complex contract dispute related to a previous agreement with the Turkish club Çaykur Rizespor, which eventually led to a four-month ban from FIFA.
European career and international play
Following a stint with Al-Gharafa in Qatar, Mehdi moved to Portugal to join Rio Ave in 2019. He made an immediate impact, scoring a hat-trick in his first start and finishing his debut season with 18 league goals. His success prompted a transfer to Porto in 2020. At Porto, he won his first European medal with the 2020 Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira and contributed to the club's 2021–22 Primeira Liga title. He became the first Iranian to score in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and received the UEFA.com Goal of the Season award for his bicycle kick against Chelsea.
In 2024, he transferred to Inter Milan, becoming the first Iranian player in the club's history. He scored his first Serie A goal in January 2025 against Lecce. Internationally, he has represented Iran at multiple FIFA World Cups and AFC Asian Cups since his senior debut in 2015.
