Biography
Who is Mike Dirnt?
Early life and education
Mike Dirnt was born Michael Ryan Pritchard in Berkeley, California, on May 4, 1972. He was adopted as a child. His father was frequently away for studies, while his mother cared for him and his sister, Myla. Following a divorce, the family lived in Rodeo and El Sobrante, California.
He attended Pinole Valley High School, where he eventually met his future bandmate. Before becoming a professional musician, he worked as a chef at a seafood restaurant called Nantucket in Crockett. He saved money to buy a truck, which he used to travel to punk shows at the 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley. He worked security at that venue, which he considered a vital part of his youth.
Formation of Green Day
While attending Pinole Valley High School in 1986, Mike and his classmate Billie Joe Armstrong formed a band named Sweet Children. They recruited drummer John Kiffmeyer, also known as Al Sobrante, to join the group. The band performed at the Gilman Street club, which encouraged Armstrong to leave school to pursue music. Mike decided to finish his education while continuing to play.
After the original bassist left, Mike moved to bass guitar. The group changed their name to Green Day in 1989. They recorded their first album, 39/Smooth, during the holiday break that same year. They started on their first van tour in June 1990, the same day Mike finished high school.
Musical style and equipment
Though he started as a guitarist, Mike transitioned to bass when Green Day became a power trio. He maintains a fast, dexterous style often associated with guitarists, using fills and pull-offs. He plays with a pick and focuses on a percussive sound using his arm rather than his wrist. He prefers a round, warm tone that balances well with the guitar.
He famously used a 1985 Fender Precision Bass to record the album Dookie. Later, he collaborated with Fender to create a signature bass model based on the 1951 Precision design, incorporating features from 1955, 1959, and 1969 models. He relies on specific strings and amplifiers, especially the Super Bassman model he helped develop in 2010.
Career highlights and personal life
Throughout his career, he faced several on-stage challenges. At Woodstock 94, security mistook him for a fan during a mud fight, leading to a tooth injury. In 1998, he suffered a skull fracture during a scuffle with a musician from another band. Despite these events, he continued to tour and record. Green Day received induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2025.
Outside of music, he is a father to three children. He married his current wife, Brittney Cade, in 2009. He also co-founded a coffee company, originally called Oakland Coffee Works, now branded as Punk Bunny Coffee.
