Early life and education
James Stephen Donaldson was born in Wichita, Kansas, on May 7, 1998, to Susan Parisher and Charles Donaldson. He grew up primarily in Greenville, North Carolina, where he attended Greenville Christian Academy and played baseball as an outfielder. During his teenage years, he received a diagnosis of Crohn's disease, which caused him to stop playing sports. After finishing high school, he briefly attended Pitt Community College in Winterville, North Carolina, before leaving to pursue online video production full time.
During his early years, he spent long hours studying the platform recommendation algorithm with other creators. His mother initially disapproved of his career choice and required him to move out of the family home. Following this viral success, his content shifted toward extravagant stunts and big financial giveaways. He attempted various challenges such as staying underwater for twenty-four hours, watching paint dry, and breaking glass with mega phones. Beyond digital video production, MrBeast established Beast Industries, a conglomerate managing multiple channels, consumer brands, and real-life competitions. He co-founded Team Trees to raise funds for the Arbor Day Foundation and later co-founded Team Seas to support ocean conservation efforts. He also launched food and snack brands such as Feastables and Lunchly to compete in the retail market. In addition, he created the reality competition series titled Beast Games.
