Directing career and filmography
Nadine Labaki began her professional career in 1990 by participating in the Lebanese talent show Studio El Fan. She later directed music videos for Middle Eastern singers like Nancy Ajram. Her work on the music video for Akhasmak ah sparked controversy due to its depiction of a waitress interacting with male customers, which some critics labeled as sexually suggestive. Labaki defended the project, arguing it portrayed an assertive and powerful female character.
In 2006, she directed her first feature film, Caramel, which she also starred in. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007. It focused on the lives of five women in a Beirut beauty salon.
