Who is Niharika Singh?
Early life and education
Niharika Singh was born on August 31, 1982 in New Delhi. She lived in several towns and hill stations in north India as a child. Her father worked for the tourism departments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Her mother managed a design institute in New Delhi. Niharika attended an all girls school in Nainital. She later studied for a B.Com (Hons) degree at the Shri Ram College of Commerce.
Modeling and pageantry
Niharika Singh began her modeling career in 1999 in Dehradun. She worked on print campaigns, fashion magazines, and music videos while in college. She moved to Mumbai in 2003 to work in entertainment full time. In 2005, she entered Femina Miss India and placed third. She won Miss Earth India and took home subtitles for Miss Beautiful Hair and Miss Photogenic. She went to the Miss Earth 2005 pageant to represent India in the Philippines. She also hosted the reality show Banungi Main Miss India for 2006 contestants.
Acting in films
Niharika Singh signed a ten film deal with Raj Kanwar in 2006, but those movies were not produced. She later took an acting class with Barry John. She filmed A New Love Ishtory, but the producer sold it to television without telling the cast. She also acted in a Kannada movie called Private Number. Her breakout role came in the first feature film Miss Lovely. This movie was part of Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2012. Niharika was nominated as a promising new actor at the 21st Screen Awards. She was selected for Berlinale Talents in 2016. She appeared in films like Anwar Ka Ajab Kissa and Sohra Bridge. She also acted in the horror anthology The Field Guide to Evil.
Producing and business
In 2019, Niharika Singh joined the production company Future East as a director. She co founded Future East Digital. She worked as a producer for the Netflix drama Class in 2023. This series looks at issues like casteism, child neglect, and income inequality in India. Her future projects include the drama Khoriya by Vishwendra Singh. This film is about the lives of Nepali workers in India. She is also producing Unidentified Actress by Ashim Ahluwalia for IFFR CineMart in 2025.
Public roles and advocacy
In 2005, the Governor of Uttarakhand appointed her as the goodwill ambassador for Rotary Blood Bank. She was welcomed as a state guest in Uttarakhand. A garden in Mussoorie bears her name. In 2017, Niharika issued a statement after Nawazuddin Siddiqui used her name in his memoir. In 2018, she wrote an essay about the Me Too movement from her view as a Dalit woman. This piece was posted by journalist Sandhya Menon. She spoke at Harvard University in 2019. She also visited Columbia University and The New School for DALIFF in New York.
