Biography
Who is Nile Rodgers?
Early life and background
Nile Rodgers was born on September 19, 1952, in New York City on the Lower East Side of Manhattan to Beverly Goodman. His mother gave birth to him when she was fourteen years old. His biological father, Nile Rodgers Sr., worked as a travelling percussionist specializing in Afro-Cuban beats and was rarely present during his upbringing. In 1959, his mother married Bobby Glanzrock, and their home in Greenwich Village often welcomed guests such as Richard Pryor, Thelonious Monk, and Lenny Bruce.
During his youth, Nile played the flute and the clarinet before learning to play the guitar at the age of sixteen. As a teenager, he performed with African, Persian, Latin, jazz, and Boogaloo bands. He also served as a subsection leader of the Lower Manhattan branch of the New York Black Panther Party and was raised as a Catholic.
Formation of Chic and musical career
Nile met bassist Bernard Edwards in 1970 while working as a touring musician for the Sesame Street stage show. Together they formed the Big Apple Band and later changed the name to Chic in 1977. The group released their self-titled debut album that same year, featuring the hit singles Dance, Dance, Dance and Everybody Dance. Their 1978 album C'est Chic included the big hit Le Freak, which sold more than seven million singles worldwide. The 1979 album Risqué featured Good Times, which became a number one single on the pop and soul charts and one of the most-sampled songs of all time.
Alongside Edwards, Nile wrote and produced music for numerous other artists. They crafted hits such as We Are Family for Sister Sledge and Upside Down for Diana Ross. Following the breakup of Chic in 1983, Nile produced albums and singles for major acts, including David Bowie's Let's Dance, Madonna's Like a Virgin, and Duran Duran's The Reflex. He later won multiple Grammy Awards for his work on Daft Punk's Random Access Memories and Beyoncé's album Renaissance.
