Who is Nina Hoss?
Early life and education
Nina Hoss was born in Stuttgart, West Germany, on July 7, 1975. Her father, Willi Hoss, was a politician and co-founder of the German Green Party. Her mother, Heidemarie Rohweder, worked as an actress at the Stuttgart National Theatre and later led the Württemberg State Playhouse.
She began performing in radio plays at age seven and made her stage debut when she was 14. Nina later attended the Merz-Schule before enrolling at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin. She graduated from that academy in 1997 alongside several other well-known actors.
Career highlights
The actress achieved her first major success in 1996 with the title role in A Girl Called Rosemary. By 2000, she was recognized as a Shooting Star at the Berlinale. Nina has maintained a long-term professional relationship with director Christian Petzold, appearing in films such as Wolfsburg, Yella, Barbara, and Phoenix.
Her performance in Yella earned her the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival. She also received the German Film Award in 2008. In more recent years, she appeared in the film Tár and the upcoming production Hedda scheduled for 2025.
Stage and music
Nina worked as an ensemble member at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin from 1998 until 2013. In 2013, she joined the Schaubühne theatre ensemble in Berlin. While at the Schaubühne, she performed in productions directed by Thomas Ostermeier, such as Little Foxes and Bella Figura.
Beyond acting, she has a background in music. She recorded the song Europa geht durch mich with the band Manic Street Preachers for their 2014 album Futurology. She also contributed to the 2021 album Bright Magic by Public Service Broadcasting.
Family and personal life
Nina married music producer Alex Silva in 2015. The couple had been in a relationship for 12 years prior to their marriage. Her family background in politics and theater has influenced her various professional and social commitments.
She has served as a goodwill ambassador for the state of Pará in Brazil. In this role, she works to protect the rainforest and support indigenous communities. She also supports the Make Poverty History campaign and advocates against female genital mutilation.
