Biography
Who is Olivier Gruner?
Early Life and Military Service
Olivier Gruner was born in Paris, France, into a family where his parents worked in surgery and engineering. He started learning martial arts at age eleven after watching a movie starring Bruce Lee. Dealing with bullying at school also drove him to learn self-defense through Shotokan karate, boxing, and kickboxing.
In 1978, at eighteen years old, Olivier joined the French Navy and volunteered for the Commandos Marine unit, also called the Berets Verts. He served operationally in Djibouti and Somalia, where he took part in anti-piracy missions. After leaving the military in 1981, he focused fully on training for a professional fighting career.
Kickboxing Career and Transition to Film
Olivier began fighting as a professional kickboxer in 1984. By the following year, his success allowed him to fight full-time, and he won a silver medal at the 1985 W.A.K.O. World Championships. He retired from professional kickboxing in 1987 to pursue acting, drawing inspiration from bodybuilders like Reg Park and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
To break into the film industry, he put up posters of himself around Cannes during the 1987 festival. This caught the attention of a producer and led to screen tests in Los Angeles. He joined Imperial Entertainment Corporation and starred in his first feature film, the urban action movie Angel Town, in 1989.
Acting and Directing Career
In 1992, Olivier starred as Alex Raine in the science fiction thriller Nemesis, directed by Albert Pyun. Both Nemesis and Angel Town achieved popularity in video distribution. Over the years, he appeared in numerous action and martial arts films, including Savage in 1996, Interceptor Force in 1999, and The Circuit in 2001.
Olivier expanded his career into directing and screenwriting. His first project as a director was Interceptor Force 2 in 2002. Later, he directed, wrote, and starred in Re-Generator in 2011, Sector 4: Extraction in 2014, and EP/Executive Protection in 2015. He also produced various projects, such as Front Line in 2015 and Iron Cross: The Road to Normandy in 2018.
Personal Protection and Aviation
Outside of filmmaking, Olivier utilizes his military background to work occasionally as a personal protection agent for high-profile clients, including the Canadian singer Celine Dion. He also offers bodyguard training through his academy, known as Gruner Tactical or Gruner Tactical Training Academy, and has produced instructional videos since 2012.
Olivier is a licensed helicopter pilot. He previously worked for ABC News in Los Angeles capturing chase footage and later flew helicopter tours for Blue Hawaiian Helicopters on Hawaii's Big Island and for Maverick Helicopters over the Grand Canyon.
