Who is Patrick Stump?
Early life and real name
Patrick Stump Martin Stumph was born on April 27, 1984, in Glenview, Illinois. His father, David, worked as a folk singer, and his mother, Patricia, worked as an accountant. He grew up as the youngest of three children in Glenview and attended Glenbrook South High School. His parents divorced when he was eight years old, and he was raised in the Catholic faith.
During his youth, he played drums in various local Chicago punk and hardcore bands. His musical influences during these formative years included artists such as Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and Nat King Cole.
Rise to fame with Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy was formed after guitarist Joe Trohman met Patrick and introduced him to bassist Pete Wentz. Although Patrick originally auditioned to play drums, he transitioned into the role of lead singer and later played guitar as well. He became the primary composer for the group, while Pete Wentz handled the lyrical duties. The band released their debut full-length album, Take This to Your Grave, in 2003 through Fueled by Ramen.
The group achieved mainstream breakthrough success with their third studio album, From Under the Cork Tree, released in May 2005. The record reached the top ten on the Billboard 200 chart and featured successful singles such as Sugar, We're Goin Down and Dance, Dance. To reduce mispronunciations, Patrick decided to professionally drop the letter h from his surname in 2003.
Chart success and solo work
Fall Out Boy continued their chart dominance with the release of Infinity on High in 2007, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. After a hiatus that began in late 2009, Patrick pursued a solo career and released his debut solo album, Soul Punk, in October 2011, which was preceded by the EP Truant Wave.
The band returned from their break in 2013 with the album Save Rock and Roll, which also debuted at number one. Subsequent albums included American Beauty/American Psycho in 2015 and Mania in 2018, both achieving major chart success. Patrick also co-founded the record label DCD2 Records with Pete Wentz in 2005, through which they signed various musical acts.
