Born Paweł Tomasz Wasilewski on July 23, 1982, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, the actor is of Polish descent. His parents are Agnieszka and Tomasz Wasilewski. He has one older sister, Monika Emara, and two younger siblings named Leah and Julia. During his childhood, he traveled to Poland for four months annually until he turned 16, which helped him become fluent in the Polish language.
Paul attended Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey, and later enrolled at Marlboro High School. He eventually transferred to Lakewood Prep School in Howell, New Jersey, to better balance his education with his early acting career. He began his theater training in New York City while still in high school. He briefly attended Rutgers University but left after one semester to pursue acting opportunities full time.

Paul Wesley began his professional acting career with roles in various television shows, including Wolf Lake, Guiding Light, and Smallville. In 2007, he starred in the miniseries Fallen. He later married Ines de Ramon in February 2019, though they separated in 2022 and finalized their divorce in February 2024. He married model Natalie Kuckenburg in July 2026. He previously maintained a four-year relationship with actress Phoebe Tonkin.
Outside of his professional work, Paul is an ethical vegan who advocates for animal rights. He received the Humane Generation Award in 2014 for his contributions to farm animal welfare.
