Who is Rahul Roy?
Early life and education
Rahul Roy was born in New Delhi, India. He attended The Lawrence School in Sanawar, Himachal Pradesh, for his early education. He later continued his studies at Ramjas College.
His family background is multi-ethnic. He has Punjabi Sikh, Maratha Rajput, Goan Saraswat, and Burmese ancestry. His mother is related to the well-known make-up artist Cory Walia. His parents are Deepak and Indira Roy.
Acting career start
Rahul Roy began his professional acting career in 1990. He starred as the lead actor in the Mahesh Bhatt production Aashiqui alongside Anu Aggarwal. This film brought him significant attention in the Indian film industry.
Following his debut, he appeared in romantic films like Sapne Sajan Ke in 1992, where he acted opposite Karishma Kapoor. During the early 1990s, he also appeared in Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee and Jaanam, both directed or produced by Mahesh Bhatt. He received a life membership from the International Film and Television Club of the Asian Academy of Film and Television.
Film challenges and later work
Throughout the 1990s, Rahul Roy signed many projects, but several were ultimately shelved. These included films like Dilon Ka Rishta, Ayudh, Premabhishek, and Dil Diya Chori Chori. He performed in movies such as Majhdhaar, Dilwale Kabhi Na Hare, and Junoon during this period. Some critics considered his work in Junoon to be his strongest acting performance.
After a break, he returned to acting in the 2005 film Meri Aashiqui. He also appeared in the comedy Naughty Boy and the film Rafta Rafta. Later, he worked on the psychological thriller To B or Not to B.
Reality television and production
In 2006, Rahul Roy participated in the first season of the reality game show Bigg Boss. The show was produced by Endemol India for Colors Viacom 18. He won the competition on January 26, 2007, based on public votes.
He also established his own company, Rahul Roy Productions. The company released its first film, titled Elaan, on November 25, 2011, in Bihar.
Personal life
Rahul Roy was married to fashion model Rajlakshmi Khanvilkar. Before their marriage, she had been married to Samir Soni. The couple divorced amicably in 2014.
