Biography
Who is Randy Jackson?
Early life and background
Randy Jackson: Steven Randall Jackson was born on October 29, 1961, in Gary, Indiana, to Joseph and Katherine Jackson. He is the ninth child and youngest son in the prominent musical family. Because he was very young when the Jackson 5 formed, he was not an original member of the group during their early Motown years.
Growing up surrounded by musicians, he learned to play multiple instruments, including the congas, percussion, keyboards, piano, bass, and guitar. He eventually began performing live with his brothers in the early 1970s before officially joining the family band later in the decade.
Musical career with the Jacksons
Randy officially joined the family group in 1975 when they moved to CBS Records and his older brother Jermaine chose to remain with Motown. The group subsequently changed their name to the Jacksons. He played percussion on tours and contributed to studio albums, including the 1980 release Triumph.
At age sixteen, he co-wrote the group's successful single Shake Your Body Down to the Ground with Michael Jackson for the album Destiny. He participated in several major concert tours with his brothers, such as the Destiny World Tour, the Triumph Tour, and the Victory Tour, before the group eventually disbanded following later projects.
Solo work and collaborations
In the late 1970s, he signed a solo recording contract with Epic Records and released a single titled How Can I Be Sure, featuring a B-side collaboration with his sister Janet Jackson. He performed the title track on the television program Soul Train as a solo artist.
Beyond his work with his family, he collaborated with various artists, contributing to Michael Jackson's album Off the Wall and Lionel Richie's album Dancing on the Ceiling. He also sang on the charity single We Are the World as part of USA for Africa and later partnered with Janet Jackson at her independent record label, Rhythm Nation Records.
