Who is Rossa?
Early life and beginnings
Born in Sumedang, West Java, she was raised by a mother who practiced the traditional Sundanese vocal art called tembang Cianjuran. This early exposure to music influenced her own foundation. She started performing at ten years old.
Her first album, Gadis Ingusan, released in 1988, marked the start of her path. She sang alongside established Indonesian rock artists like Nicky Astria and Nike Ardilla. Benyamin Sueb, a cultural figure, predicted she would achieve national and international fame if she worked in Jakarta.
Career breakthrough and hits
Her career gained significant momentum with the 1996 album Nada-Nada Cinta. This project sold over 750,000 copies, and its title track stayed at the top of the MTV Ampuh Indonesia chart for eighteen weeks. She followed this with the successful 1999 album Tegar.
By 2002, she had finished her studies at the University of Indonesia. That same year, she won Best Female Solo Artist at the Anugerah Musik Indonesia for the single Kini. The 2004 album Kembali secured her status, leading to recognition as an exclusive artist by MTV Malaysia. The 2006 album Yang Terpilih featured hits like Terlalu Cinta and Atas Nama Cinta, which became a theme song for the television drama Cinta Fitri.
Concert tours and business
She is known for staging major concert events. In 2008, she performed her first solo concert, Persembahan Cinta, at the Jakarta Convention Center. Later, she staged the Melodi Cinta concert in Malaysia in 2010, which drew over 12,000 attendees.
Rossa expanded into business by launching the Diva Family Karaoke chain. This venture grew into a prominent business in the region. She also served as a judge on the first season of X-Factor Indonesia, where her contestant eventually won the competition.
International recognition and awards
Her impact on music remains substantial. In 2019, she became the first artist from Southeast Asia to sign with SM Entertainment. She has accumulated over 120 awards throughout her career. Her 2014 album Love, Life & Music set a record by selling over 100,000 CDs in one day.
The 2011 compilation The Best of Rossa reached over 5 million copies sold. She has also contributed songs to more than 170 films and television series. The first part of her trilogy album, Another path: The Beginning, released in 2023, achieved multi-platinum status with over 500,000 copies sold. She holds honorary titles from the Surakarta Palace and the Pahang Kingdom in Malaysia.
