Who is Roy Makaay?
Early career and professional start
Roy Makaay began his professional path in the mid-1990s while playing for Vitesse. He later moved to Tenerife to compete in the Spanish First Division. During this period, he established himself as a talented striker capable of scoring from various positions.
His skill set as a forward included strong aerial ability and the capacity to drive quickly toward the net. He was effective at finishing chances using either foot. These traits helped him gain recognition before his major move to Deportivo La Coruña in 1999.
Major club achievements
After joining Deportivo La Coruña, Roy helped the club secure its first La Liga title during his debut season. He also won the Copa del Rey in 2002. During the 2002-03 season, he earned the European Golden Shoe after scoring 29 goals, making him the top scorer in Europe.
In 2003, Bayern Munich signed him for a record fee of €18.75 million. While playing in Germany, he won two consecutive Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal doubles. He earned nicknames like Das Phantom and Tormaschine due to his clinical finishing and ability to score unexpectedly.
International career and Olympics
Roy Makaay represented the Netherlands national team between 1996 and 2005. He earned 43 caps and scored six goals for his country. He participated in two UEFA European Championships during his international tenure.
In 2008, he served as an overage player for the Dutch squad at the Olympics. He acted as the captain for the team during this tournament. The squad eventually reached the quarter-finals before losing to Argentina.
Coaching and retirement
