Who is Ryan Bertrand?
Early life and background
Ryan Bertrand was born in Southwark, located in London. He is of Irish and Dominican descent. During his childhood, he attended The Robert Napier School in Gillingham, Kent.
His football path began at the age of nine when he joined the youth system at Gillingham. He progressed through their ranks before moving on to higher levels of professional football.
Chelsea and early career
In July 2005, Ryan signed with Chelsea from Gillingham for an initial fee of £125,000. Between 2006 and 2010, he spent time on loan at several different clubs to gain experience. These included spells at AFC Bournemouth, Oldham Athletic, and Norwich City. He also played for Reading and Nottingham Forest during these loan periods.
Ryan made his full debut for Chelsea in April 2011 during a match against Birmingham City. In the 2011-12 season, he signed a four-year contract extension. A major highlight occurred in May 2012, when he became the first player to debut in a Champions League final. He played in a winning match against Bayern Munich.
Southampton and Leicester City years
After a loan spell at Southampton during the 2014-15 season, Ryan Bertrand joined the club on a permanent basis in 2015. He stayed with the team for seven seasons and made 240 appearances. During his time there, he was named to the PFA Team of the Year in 2015.
In 2021, he moved to Leicester City on a free transfer. He played for the club for two seasons before leaving at the end of his contract in 2023. Ryan Bertrand eventually announced his retirement from professional football on June 18, 2024.
England international career
Ryan represented England at various youth levels, including the under-17, under-18, under-19, under-20, and under-21 squads. He was a member of the under-19 team during the 2008 European Championship. He also played for Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
His senior international debut for England took place in August 2012. This match was a friendly game against Italy, which resulted in a 2-1 victory for his team.
