Who is Sally Amaki?
Early life and background
Sally Amaki was born in Los Angeles on April 26, 2000. Her parents are both Japanese who moved to the United States before meeting and marrying. This heritage makes her a second generation Japanese American. She grew up with an older brother.
Before she moved to Japan, she studied ballet and ice skating. She especially trained in skating with the late Olympian Denis Ten. English is her first language, though she also speaks Japanese along with some French and Spanish.
Moving to Japan and career beginnings
In 2016, Sally moved to Japan by herself to pursue a career in voice acting. She felt anime had positively impacted her life and wanted to give back to the industry. She faced many rejections during auditions, often because her Japanese language skills were not yet strong enough.
By December 2016, she successfully auditioned for a project led by Yasushi Akimoto. This group was later named 22/7. While she initially felt hesitant about becoming an idol, she joined the group. The group eventually debuted in 2017.
Work with 22/7 and voice acting
Within the 22/7 group, Sally performs as herself and as an animated character named Sakura Fujima. She provides both the voice and motion capture for this persona. Her profile rose internationally after a video of her joking in English went viral on Twitter. Her character was subsequently rewritten to be an English speaker to reflect her real-life background.
Beyond her idol work, she has voiced several well-known characters. Her roles include Akubi in the project Pandora to Akubi and Carol Olston in Tomo-chan Is a Girl. She also provided the voice for Kiriko in the video game Overwatch 2 and Peni Parker in Marvel Rivals. In 2025, she played Lily Baker in Cultural Exchange with a Game Centre Girl, where she also sang the opening and ending themes.
Public appearances and personal life
Sally Amaki has been open about her health. In 2019, she revealed that she has lived with social anxiety disorder since joining the group. She stated she would step back from handshake events to focus on her treatment. She is also a public supporter of LGBT rights.
She has participated in various industry events. In 2018, she appeared at the Anime Expo in Los Angeles alongside fellow group members Mei Hanakawa and Reina Miyase. Later, in March 2023, she co-hosted the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in Tokyo with presenter Jon Kabira.
