Who is Samira Efendi?
Early career and music competitions
Samira Efendi was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, and pursued a career in music from a young age. She started participating in local singing competitions in 2009 when she appeared on Yeni Ulduz. This was followed by an appearance on the show Böyük Səhnə in 2014. During this same year, she attempted to qualify for the Eurovision Song Contest through the national selection process for Azerbaijan, though she was eliminated during the third heat.
Her profile continued to grow throughout the mid-2010s as she gained more experience in televised singing events. In 2015 and 2016, she was a contestant on The Voice of Azerbaijan, where she finished the season in third place. She later competed in the Silk Way Star competition held in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in 2017, securing another third-place finish. In 2019, she returned to Kazakhstan to perform at the Voice of Nur-Sultan festival.
Eurovision Song Contest
In February 2020, the Azerbaijani broadcaster İTV announced that Samira Efendi had been selected to represent the nation at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam with the song Cleopatra. This event was ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She was later selected to represent Azerbaijan again in the 2021 edition of the competition.
For the 2021 contest, she performed the song Mata Hari. She successfully qualified for the final round of the competition, where she eventually placed 20th out of 26 participating countries, earning a total of 65 points. Years later, in 2025, she returned to the Eurovision stage as part of an interval act. During the second semi-final of the 2025 event, she performed her original 2020 entry Cleopatra alongside other artists like Gjon's Tears, the Roop, and Destiny.
