Biography
Who is Sandie Shaw?
Early life and beginnings
Sandra Ann Goodrich was born in Dagenham, England, on February 26, 1947. She attended the Robert Clack Technical School in Becontree Heath. After finishing her schooling, she took a job at the local Ford Dagenham factory. During this time, she also did some part-time modelling work.
Her path changed after she placed second in a local singing competition. As a prize for her performance, she appeared at a London charity concert. This event allowed her to be discovered by the singer Adam Faith, who introduced her to his manager, Eve Taylor. Taylor secured her a recording contract with Pye Records in 1964 and gave her the stage name Sandie Shaw.
Musical career and hits
Sandie Shaw worked closely with the songwriter Chris Andrews during her early career. Her first single was titled As Long as You're Happy Baby, though it did not chart. Her second release was a cover of the Bacharach and David song (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me. This track reached the number one spot on the UK Singles Chart in the autumn of 1964.
Following this success, she released other popular songs such as Girl Don't Come, which reached number three in the UK, and I'll Stop at Nothing. In 1965, her single Long Live Love also hit number one in the United Kingdom.
Eurovision and international success
In 1967, the BBC invited Sandie to represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Vienna. She performed the song Puppet on a String, which was composed by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter. Although she initially had reservations about the track, it won the contest by a significant margin. This victory made her the first British entrant to win Eurovision.
The single achieved big commercial success, selling over four million copies globally and becoming the largest-selling single of the year in Germany. She also recorded many of her hit singles in languages such as Italian, French, German, and Spanish to increase her popularity across Europe.
Performing style and later career
Sandie Shaw was widely known for performing barefoot during her concerts, a trademark that became part of her image as the barefoot pop princess of the 1960s. Beyond singing, she explored various other creative pursuits. In 1968, she launched her own fashion label to sell clothing, shoes, and jewellery. She also hosted her own television program, The Sandie Shaw Supplement.
By the 1970s, her musical focus shifted as her contract with Pye Records ended. She pursued acting, playing roles such as Ophelia in Hamlet and Joan of Arc in Saint Joan. She also worked as a waitress in a central London restaurant for a time. Later in her life, she returned to university and qualified as a psychotherapist in 1994. Sandie Shaw officially retired from the music industry in 2013.
