Early life and youth career
Sebastian Giovinco was born in Turin, Italy, on January 26, 1987. He grew up in the comune of Beinasco, located southwest of the city. His family background includes a father from Bisacquino in the province of Palermo and a mother from Catanzaro in Southern Italy. He has a younger brother named Giuseppe who also pursued a career in professional football.
In 1996, at the age of nine, he joined the Juventus youth system. He moved through the various ranks of the club over the next decade. During the 2005 to 2006 season, he played for the Primavera squad. He helped the team win the Campionato Nazionale Primavera, the Coppa Italia Primavera, and the Supercoppa Primavera. He also reached the final of the Viareggio Tournament, where officials named him the best player of the competition.
Professional club career in Italy
Sebastian Giovinco made his professional debut with Juventus FC on May 12, 2007, during a Serie B match against Bologna. He entered the game as a substitute and provided an assist for a goal by David Trezeguet. Following this, he spent time on loan with Empoli FC starting in July 2007. He scored his first Serie A goal that September against Palermo. He later returned to Juventus, though he struggled to secure a permanent spot in the starting lineup during the 2008 to 2009 season.
In August 2010, Parma Calcio 1913 signed him on a loan deal. He found significant success there, scoring seven goals in 30 league appearances during his first season. Parma eventually purchased half of his transfer rights. During his second season with Parma, he became the club's leading scorer with 15 goals in Serie A. Juventus brought him back in 2012 by purchasing the remaining transfer rights. International success and move abroad
Sebastian Giovinco joined Major League Soccer club Toronto FC in 2015. During his four seasons with the Canadian team, he helped them win three Canadian Championships. In 2017, the team achieved a historic domestic treble, securing both the MLS Cup and the Supporters' Shield. Individually, he earned the MLS Golden Boot, the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award, and the MLS MVP Award. He finished his time in Toronto as the club's all-time top goalscorer.
Following his time in North America, he joined the Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. With them, he won the AFC Champions League, the Saudi Pro League, and the King Cup. He later returned to Italy for a brief period with Sampdoria in 2022. At the international level, he debuted for the Italy men's national association football team in 2011. He collected 23 caps and participated in UEFA Euro 2012, where his team finished as runners-up. He also played in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, where he scored his only international goal and won a bronze medal.
