Who is Simon Rolfes?
Early football career
Simon Rolfes began his professional path within the Werder Bremen academy system. During the 2000-01 season, he appeared in 26 league matches for the reserve squad and scored five goals. These goals came against opponents including Dresdner SC, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Lüneburger SK, Erzgebirge Aue, and Fortuna Köln. He also played in the DFB-Pokal during this period.
In the 2001-02 campaign, he recorded seven goals across 31 league games and one goal in two DFB-Pokal matches. His following season saw him play 17 league games with two goals and one DFB-Pokal appearance. He also made a UEFA Cup appearance for the first team on 3 October 2002 against Metalurh Donetsk, entering the match in the 68th minute to replace Krisztián Lisztes. He later moved to SSV Reutlingen on loan for the rest of that season, making 13 appearances.
Bayer Leverkusen and international play
Simon Rolfes joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2005, where he eventually became the team captain. He was a consistent presence on the pitch, playing 37 matches in the 2005-06 season and 49 in the 2006-07 season. He also appeared in 47 matches during 2007-08 and 39 matches in 2008-09. A knee injury on 2 July 2009 impacted his availability, causing him to miss several matchdays during the 2009-10 season. He made his final appearance of that season against 1899 Hoffenheim on matchday 19.
After returning to full fitness, he played 36 matches in the following season. He remained a regular player, recording 40 appearances in both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons. He also played 43 games in 2013-14 and 33 in 2014-15. He announced his retirement from professional football following the conclusion of the 2014-15 season. He currently serves as the managing director of sport for the club.
