Biography
Who is St. Vincent?
Early life and real name
St. Vincent was born Anne Erin Clark in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on September 28, 1982. Her parents are Sharon Christine and Richard Rick Clark, and her mother works as a social worker and administrator. Her parents divorced when she was three years old, and she later moved to Dallas, Texas, with her mother and two older sisters.
As a child, she enjoyed the movie La Bamba and received her first red plastic guitar from a Target store at age five. She began playing a real guitar at age twelve and took classes with Tony Hyatt. She graduated from Lake Highlands High School in 2001, where she participated in theater and the jazz band.
Education and early career
She attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, studying with professor Lauren Passarelli. She left the institution after three years because she felt art schools focused too much on quantifiable aesthetics rather than the actual product of making music.
After leaving Berklee, she returned to Texas and briefly joined the choral rock band the Polyphonic Spree just before a European tour. She also played with Sufjan Stevens' touring band and recorded an EP titled Paris Is Burning before launching her solo career.
Solo music and albums
St. Vincent released her debut solo studio album, Marry Me, in 2007 on Beggars Banquet Records. The songs were largely written when she was eighteen and nineteen years old. Her second album, Actor, followed in 2009 and gained more commercial attention, charting well on the Billboard Independent Albums list.
She released several more studio albums, including Strange Mercy in 2011 and her self-titled fourth album in 2014, which received widespread critical acclaim. Later projects included the albums Masseduction, Daddy's Home, and All Born Screaming, along with collaborations with artists like David Byrne and Jack Antonoff.
Collaborations and film work
Beyond her solo work, St. Vincent produced Sleater-Kinney's ninth studio album, The Center Won't Hold, and co-wrote Taylor Swift's Billboard Hot 100 number-one single Cruel Summer. Her accolades include multiple Grammy Awards, including wins for Best Alternative Music Album.
She also directed a segment in the horror anthology film XX and co-wrote and starred in the psychological thriller film The Nowhere Inn. Her songs have been featured on soundtracks for The Twilight Saga, including the track Rosyln with Bon Iver.
