Who is Stefan Kapičić?
Early life and background
Stefan Kapičić was born on December 1, 1978, in Cologne, West Germany. His mother was a Montenegrin actress named Slobodanka Beba Žugić, and his father was a professional basketball player named Dragan Kapičić. During his early childhood, his father played basketball for a team based in Cologne called Saturn Köln. When Stefan was three years old, his family moved back to the region then known as SFR Yugoslavia.
His interest in comic books began during his childhood. When he was six, his grandfather Jovo Kapičić purchased his first comic book for him. This experience fostered an ongoing enthusiasm for the medium that would later influence his professional choices. He eventually pursued formal training in the arts and studied acting at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts located in Belgrade.
Career beginnings and Deadpool
By 2015, Stefan Kapičić had already accumulated extensive professional experience with more than 80 roles across various mediums including television, film, and theater. One well-known performance occurred in the 2015 movie Bićemo prvaci sveta. In this project, he portrayed his own father, Dragan, in a story focused on the Yugoslavian national basketball team that claimed victory at the 1970 FIBA World Championship.
His breakthrough into international cinema came through the superhero film Deadpool. He participated in a secret casting process for the role of Colossus. He did not know which project he was auditioning for until he successfully passed the second round of evaluations. During his third audition session with director Tim Miller in Los Angeles, he completed 120 takes over an eight-hour period. He was chosen partly because the director wanted a performer who could provide a Russian accent for the character, which aligns with the comic book origin of Colossus.
Recent projects and personal life
Stefan Kapičić continues to work in film and television. In 2023, he appeared as the character Olgaren in the horror film The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Outside of his acting work, he serves as a member of the Council for Film Industry of Montenegro.
In his personal life, he is married to Ivana Horvat, who is a Croatian actress. The couple became engaged in December 2015 and held their wedding in 2017. Stefan is multilingual and speaks Serbian, English, German, and Russian.
