Who is Steffen Iversen?
Early life and beginnings
Born in Oslo on November 10, 1976, Steffen Iversen grew up in a football family. His father was the productive goalscorer Odd Iversen. When Steffen was three, the family moved to Trondheim. He started his football path at the club his father played for, Rosenborg. At the age of seven, he joined a local club called Nationalkameratene. That contract, signed by his father on February 16, 1984, included a special clause. It allowed him to return to Rosenborg without any fee later on.
Tottenham Hotspur and England career
In December 1996, Steffen transferred to the English club Tottenham Hotspur for 2.3 million pounds. Just four days after his last Rosenborg match, he made his debut against Coventry City. During his first season, he scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win against Sunderland. Over seven seasons at White Hart Lane, he became a key player. He helped the team win the League Cup in 1999, providing the assist for the winning goal. He also scored the decisive goal in the semi-final match against Wimbledon.
Return to Norway and club successes
After his time in England, he returned to Norway in 2004 to join Vålerenga. He played a key part in their success during the 2005 season, winning the league title. This was the first championship for the club in 21 years. In 2006, he moved back to Rosenborg. He was the top scorer for the team in the 2006-07 season with 18 goals. This helped him secure another league title. He continued to play for Rosenborg until 2010.
International career and coaching
Internationally, he was a regular for the Norway under-21 team. He scored 17 goals in 23 matches for that squad, which remains a record. He helped the team finish third in the 1998 UEFA U-21 Championship, scoring all of Norway's goals in that tournament. He made his senior debut in a qualifier against Albania. He scored his first goal for the senior team in a friendly against Jamaica in 1999.
