Who is Stephanie Del Valle Diaz?
Education and early career
Before her time in global pageantry, Stephanie Del Valle Diaz worked as a muse for Carlos Alberto, a fashion designer based in Puerto Rico. She is multilingual, maintaining proficiency in French, Spanish, and English.
Stephanie later enrolled at Pace University located in New York City. At this institution, she focused her academic efforts on studying communication alongside law.
Rise to Miss World success
In 2016, Stephanie competed in the Miss Mundo de Puerto Rico pageant while representing the municipality of Toa Baja. She secured the title, receiving her crown from the previous winner, Keysi Marie Vargas Vélez, and also earned the talent award during the event.
She moved on to represent her country at the Miss World 2016 competition, which took place in Oxon Hill, Maryland. During the grand finale, she was selected as one of the top five finalists. Mireia Lalaguna, the Miss World 2015 winner from Spain, crowned Stephanie as the new titleholder. This victory marked the second time a contestant from Puerto Rico had won this specific international pageant.
As part of her duties during her reign, she traveled extensively to countries including India, China, Indonesia, South Africa, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom, in addition to many visits across Puerto Rico.
Legal challenges and hosting
Stephanie was scheduled to co-host the Miss World 2021 event at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum, but the finale was delayed to March 2022 because of an outbreak of the Omicron variant among participants. Prior to the new date, she and her nonprofit, Reignite Puerto Rico, faced a lawsuit from the organization Puerto Rico with a Purpose regarding breach of contract allegations.
She publicly denied these claims on television and social media, calling the accusations false. Alongside her parents, she filed a countersuit against the organization for emotional damages. By February 2022, she announced via Instagram that she would no longer host the event, citing ethical concerns. In March 2022, the Miss World organization released a statement supporting her stance, and both legal cases remain active.
