Who is Sylvia Hoeks?
Early life and education
Sylvia Hoeks grew up in Maarheeze, located in North Brabant, Netherlands. During her high school years, she was scouted by Elite Model Management at the age of fourteen. Her first modeling job was appearing on the cover of Elle Girl. She traveled around Europe for several modeling jobs while simultaneously finishing her high school education.
After completing high school, Sylvia enrolled at the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts. Besides her native Dutch language, she learned to speak German, French, and English fluently. This language skill allowed her to take on roles in various international productions throughout her acting career.
Acting career highlights
Shortly after graduating from the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts, Sylvia secured a main role in the Dutch television film Staatsgevaarlijk. In 2005, she appeared as a mistress in the television series Gooische Vrouwen and took on a main role in the psychological thriller series Vuurzee. Her major career breakthrough happened in 2007 when she starred in the Jos Stelling film Duska.
Her performance in Duska earned her a Golden Calf for Best Supporting Actress. She continued working in Dutch cinema by playing Julia in The Storm in 2009 and taking the title role in Tirza in 2010. In 2011, she starred as Johanna van Heesch in The Gang of Oss and played Elise in The Girl and Death in 2012. She also starred in the television drama series Bloedverwanten from 2010 to 2014 and the thriller series Overspel from 2011 to 2015.
International recognition
In 2013, Sylvia made her first international film appearance by playing Claire Ibbetson in The Best Offer. She achieved global recognition in 2017 when she portrayed the replicant Luv in the science fiction film Blade Runner 2049. To prepare for this demanding role, she trained in martial arts and with weights for six hours a day, six days a week.
Following Blade Runner 2049, she appeared as Lara in the action film Renegades and was cast as Leigh in All the Devil's Men. In 2018, she played the sister of Lisbeth Salander in the thriller film The Girl in the Spider's Web. From 2019 to 2022, she played Queen Kane in the Apple TV plus drama series See. In 2024, she became the voice of Sigrid in the animated series Twilight of the Gods and starred in the thriller A Sacrifice.
