Who is Takeshi Okada?
Early life and playing career
Takeshi Okada was born in Osaka, Japan, on August 25, 1956. After completing his education at Waseda University, he began his professional path in 1980 with Furukawa Electric in the Japan Soccer League. During his time as a defender, he helped the club secure the JSL Cup in 1982 and achieved a major double in 1986 by winning both the league and the cup. That same year, his team became the first Japanese club to win the Asian Club Championship. Takeshi was recognized for his individual performance by being named to the league Best Eleven for the 1985–86 season.
On the international stage, Takeshi made his debut for the Japan national team in June 1980 during a match against Hong Kong. He represented his country in various competitions, including the 1982 Asian Games where he scored a goal against South Korea. He also participated in qualification matches for the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1986 FIFA World Cup. By the time he finished his playing career in 1990, he had appeared in 189 league matches and earned 24 caps for the national squad.
Rise to national team manager
Takeshi transitioned into coaching immediately after retiring as a player, starting at his former club Furukawa Electric. In 1995, he joined the national team coaching staff. His big break came in October 1997 during the final round of World Cup qualification when he was promoted to manager following the dismissal of Shu Kamo. Under his leadership, Japan successfully qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in history. Although the team lost all three matches at the 1998 tournament in France, Takeshi Okada had already established himself as a key figure in Japanese football history.
Following his first stint with the national team, he moved to club management with Consadole Sapporo in 1999. He guided the team to a J2 League title in 2000, which earned them promotion to the top flight. In 2003, he took over at Yokohama F. Marinos and achieved immediate success by winning the J.League Division 1 title. He was named J.League Manager of the Year in both 2003 and 2004 after securing back-to-back championships. He eventually left the club in August 2006 after a period of declining results.
World Cup success and later roles
In late 2007, Takeshi returned to lead the Japan national team after Ivica Osim suffered a stroke. During this second tenure, he focused on integrating young talent such as Keisuke Honda and Shinji Kagawa into the squad. This strategy proved successful as Japan qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. At the tournament, he led the team to a ninth-place finish, exceeding many expectations. His tactical achievements earned him the AFC Coach of the Year award in 2010. He stepped down from the national role shortly after the competition ended.
Takeshi later managed Hangzhou Greentown in the Chinese Super League from 2011 until 2013. In November 2014, he took on a different role by purchasing a majority stake in FC Imabari and becoming the club chairman. He also contributed to the administration of the sport as the vice-president of the Japan Football Association between 2016 and 2018. For his extensive contributions to the game as both a player and a strategist, he was inducted into the Japan Football Hall of Fame in 2019.
