Who is Teemu Pukki?
Early life and background
Teemu Pukki was born in Kotka, Finland. He spent his childhood in Hovinsaari where he first began playing football for the HOPS club. This early start in the sport eventually led him to join the youth ranks of his hometown team, KTP.
As a young player, he progressed to the KTP under-19 side before earning a spot on the senior roster. He made his professional debut for the first team at the age of 16 during a Finnish Cup match. During his two seasons with KTP, he recorded 29 appearances in the Veikkausliiga and scored three goals.
Professional club career
In 2008, he moved from KTP to Sevilla for a transfer fee of 180,000 euros. While he was called up for a La Liga match against Real Madrid, he remained an unused substitute. He eventually made his La Liga debut against Racing in January 2009 before returning to Finland to join HJK.
At HJK, he won the Veikkausliiga championship and the Finnish Cup. He later played in the German Bundesliga for Schalke 04, where he became the third Finn to score two goals in a single match. His career also included stints with Celtic in Scotland and Brøndby in Denmark, where he was the top scorer during the 2014-15 season.
Success at Norwich City
Teemu Pukki joined Norwich City on a free transfer in June 2018. He had a highly successful period with the club, earning the EFL Championship Player of the Season award for the 2018-19 campaign. He also received the PFA Fans' Player of the Year title during this time.
After moving to the Premier League, he scored a hat-trick against Newcastle United and was named the Premier League Player of the Month in August 2019. Even after the club's relegation, he remained a key player, finishing as the top scorer for Norwich for four consecutive seasons. He scored his fiftieth goal for the club during the 2020-21 season.
International career highlights
Teemu Pukki made his first appearance for the Finnish national team in 2009. He has since earned more than 130 caps for his country. He holds the record as the all-time leading male goalscorer for Finland with 43 international goals.
One of his most well-known achievements was his performance during the UEFA Euro 2020 qualification campaign. He scored ten goals in ten matches during that period. His scoring helped Finland reach a major international tournament for the first time in their history.
