Biography
Who is Tim Krul?
Early football life
Tim Krul started playing youth football at a club called RAS. He then joined the local Dutch side ADO Den Haag. In the summer of 2005, he moved to the English Premier League club Newcastle United. This move involved a legal disagreement regarding compensation fees. The Court of Arbitration for Sport eventually ordered Newcastle to pay ADO Den Haag for the transfer.
Tim made his first-team debut for the Magpies in November 2006 during a UEFA Cup match against the Italian team Palermo. He kept a clean sheet in that specific game. However, he soon suffered an injury that required two cartilage operations. This kept him away from the pitch for approximately six months.
Loan spells and Newcastle breakthrough
To gain experience, Tim was sent on loan to the Scottish club Falkirk in August 2007. He kept a clean sheet in his first appearance there, which was a four-nil victory against Gretna. His loan was extended, but he later missed time due to a shoulder injury. He also spent time on loan at Carlisle United during the 2008 season.
Upon returning to Newcastle, he served as a reserve player. He eventually made his league debut for the club in May 2010 against Queens Park Rangers. In the 2010-2011 season, he made his Premier League debut as a substitute against Everton. He gradually replaced Steve Harper as the primary choice for the goalkeeper position.
International duty and club success
Tim represented the Netherlands at various youth levels before making his full international debut in July 2011. He was part of the Dutch squad that finished third in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. During the tournament, he played in the quarter-final penalty shootout against Costa Rica. He helped the team secure a win in that match.
Throughout his time at Newcastle, he faced several injury challenges, including ankle issues and a dislocated shoulder. Despite these setbacks, he made over 50 appearances for the club by late 2011. He was named the Newcastle United Player of the Year at the end of the 2011-2012 season.
Later years and club career
In later seasons, Tim went on loan to Ajax and AZ Alkmaar to secure playing time. In 2017, he signed with Brighton and Hove Albion, reuniting with his former manager Chris Hughton. After his time at Brighton, he moved to Norwich City in 2018.
During his time with the Canaries, he won the EFL Championship title on two separate occasions. He was also recognized as the Player of the Season for Norwich. His professional career spanned many years across both the Netherlands and England, establishing him as a well-known figure in the sport.
