Biography
Who is Todd Herzog?
Early life and career beginnings
Born on January 29, 1985, Todd Herzog grew up in Pleasant Grove, Utah. He was raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He attended Pleasant Grove High School before entering the workforce. Before finding fame on television, he spent his time working as a flight attendant for SkyWest Airlines. Todd held dual citizenship in both the United States and Canada because his mother was originally from Scarborough, Ontario.
His interest in reality television began at a young age. When the first season of Survivor aired, he was only fifteen years old and immediately felt a strong desire to participate in the competition. This early ambition eventually led him to apply for the show years later. To claim his million-dollar prize after his eventual win, legal requirements forced him to renounce his Canadian citizenship, leaving him solely as an American citizen.
Winning Survivor China
Todd Herzog competed on the fifteenth season of the American show Survivor, which took place in China. He was a member of the Fei Long Tribe and formed a lasting alliance with Amanda Kimmel. Throughout the game, he demonstrated strategic gameplay by managing idols and handling tribe swaps. He worked closely with various contestants like Courtney Yates and Denise Martin to reach the final stages of the competition. At one point, he even gave a hidden immunity idol to James Clement to influence the voting process.
During the final Tribal Council, the jury questioned his manipulative tactics. He admitted to betraying allies like Jean-Robert Bellande because he viewed them as strategic threats. Despite his deceptive moves, the jury appreciated his honesty about his gameplay. Todd won the title of Sole Survivor and the million-dollar prize in a 4-2-1 vote against Courtney Yates and Amanda Kimmel. Following his victory, he appeared on the cover of Instinct magazine in December 2007.
Personal life and health challenges
Outside of his television career, Todd is openly gay. He previously had a relationship with Spencer Duhm, who was a contestant on Survivor: Tocantins. In August 2019, he became engaged to Jess Hermansen. The couple later married on November 11, 2020. These personal milestones marked a new chapter for the reality star after his time in the public eye during the late 2000s.
In 2013, Todd struggled with alcoholism and appeared on the Dr. Phil show for assistance. He later raised concerns about the production of that episode, claiming he was provided with alcohol and medication before his appearance. The production company denied these allegations. During this difficult period, he received public support from fellow Survivor participants like Sandra Diaz-Twine and Courtney Yates.
