Who is Tom DeLonge?
Early life and background
Thomas Matthew DeLonge was born on December 13, 1975, in Poway, California. He grew up as the son of Constance and Thomas Lyon DeLonge. His family includes a sister named Kari and a brother named Shon. During his childhood, he was of Mexican and German descent.
Music played a role in his youth when he received a trumpet as a gift for Christmas at age 11. He later received his first acoustic guitar from two friends in the sixth grade. Before focusing on music, he was part of the San Diego Cadet Program and had intentions of becoming a firefighter.
How Tom became famous
In 1992, Tom DeLonge formed the band Blink-182 alongside Mark Hoppus and Scott Raynor. The group initially performed under different names like Figure 8 and Duck Tape. They eventually released their debut album, Cheshire Cat, in 1995 through Cargo Music.
The band saw big commercial success following the release of Dude Ranch in 1997. After Travis Barker replaced Scott Raynor in 1998, the group released Enema of the State in 1999. This third album sold over 15 million copies and achieved quadruple-platinum status in the United States.
Career highlights and projects
Following his first departure from Blink-182 in 2005, he created the rock band Angels & Airwaves. This group has released five albums and serves as an art project involving various media. He later returned to Blink-182 in 2009 and again in 2022 after another period away.
In 2002, he worked on the post-hardcore side project Box Car Racer with Travis Barker. Beyond performing, he has also worked in film by scoring and producing the 2011 movie Love. He is also a published author, having written the children's book The Lonely Astronaut on Christmas Eve in 2013.
