Tyson Beckford was born in the Bronx, New York, on December 19, 1970. His mother is Hillary Dixon Hall, and his father is Lloyd Beckford. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Jamaica, where they lived for seven years before moving to Rochester, New York.
During his school years in New York, Tyson attended Pittsford Mendon High School and graduated from the institution. He has mentioned that he faced teasing regarding his appearance during his school years before launching his professional career.
Rise to modeling fame
In 1992, Erik Lauren Counsel approached Tyson in Washington Square Park to feature him in a style piece for the hip hop magazine The Source. This initial encounter led to further photographic work and opened doors in the fashion industry.
By 1993, Ralph Lauren recruited Tyson as the primary model for the brand's Polo line of male sportswear. This role propelled him to international supermodel status, achieving a level of fame comparable to the top female models of the 1990s.
Television and media career
Beyond print modeling, Tyson expanded his career into television hosting and acting. He served as the host for both seasons of the Bravo modeling competition program Make Me a Supermodel.
