Early life and background
Vince Neil was born in Hollywood, California, on February 8, 1961. His parents were Shirley and Clois Wharton. As a teenager, he enjoyed various activities beyond music, including surfing, basketball, baseball, football, and wrestling. He developed a strong interest in music early on, citing bands like AC/DC, Aerosmith, path, and The Beach Boys as major influences. He also looked up to Van Halen, often imitating the look and attitude of their frontman David Lee Roth.
Rise to fame with Mötley Crüe
Vince was performing with a group called Rock Candy when he was discovered by members of Mötley Crüe. Drummer Tommy Lee had known him from their high school days and suggested that his image would fit well with the new band. He officially joined the group in 1981. Their first recording together was the 1981 album Too Fast for Love.
The group achieved international stardom with their 1983 release, Shout at the Devil. Throughout the 1980s, the band released several popular albums, including Theatre of Pain, Girls, Girls, Girls, and the chart-topping Dr. Feelgood. These records established the group as one of the most recognizable rock acts worldwide during that decade.
Departure and solo career
In 1992, the band and Vince parted ways. He began pursuing a solo career, releasing his debut single, You're Invited (But Your Friend Can't Come), for the film Encino Man. His first solo album, Exposed, came out in 1993 and reached number 13 on the Billboard charts. His band for this project included musicians Steve Stevens, Dave Marshall, Robbie Crane, and Vikki Foxx.
He released a second solo album titled Carved in Stone in 1995. This record was produced by the Dust Brothers and featured a song dedicated to his daughter, Skylar. Later, in 2010, he released his third solo studio album, Tattoos & Tequila, which served as a musical companion to his book of the same name.
Reunions and business ventures
The classic lineup reunited in 1997, leading to the release of the album Generation Swine. Throughout the 2000s, the band continued to tour and record, releasing Saints of Los Angeles in 2008. Following a final world tour that concluded in 2015, he confirmed in 2018 that the group had reformed and planned to create new music.
Beyond music, he has engaged in many business ventures. He opened a tattoo parlor called Vince Neil Ink on the Las Vegas Strip and launched a brand of tequila named Tres Rios.
